Words in meaningful groups

heritage — di sản. Recipes are part of cultural heritage.
preserve — gìn giữ. Families preserve recipes by teaching children.
generation — thế hệ. Each generation adds its memories.
traditional — truyền thống. We cooked a traditional dish.
festival — lễ hội. The festival brings neighbours together.
communal — thuộc cộng đồng. They met in a communal courtyard.
memorise — ghi nhớ. Pupils used to memorise long lessons.
barefoot — chân trần. Some children walked barefoot in the past.

Pronunciation workshop

/m/ is made with lips together and a nasal voice, as in memory. /l/ uses the tongue near the ridge behind the upper teeth, as in lesson. Keep the final /l/ in school audible without adding a new syllable.

Read the example words slowly, then in a short sentence. Record one attempt only with permission. Compare the target sound or stress with the reference, and repeat the phrase without adding an extra vowel.

Language focus: Past continuous: was/were + V-ing describes an action in progress at a past time. Past simple can interrupt it: While Grandma was cooking, I arrived. Wish + past simple expresses an unreal present wish: I wish I knew the recipe. With be, were is a standard form for all subjects in wishes.
