Mai prepared a class display about the three circles of English. In this broad model, the Inner Circle describes settings where English has traditionally been a first language, such as the UK. The Outer Circle includes settings where English has a long-established institutional role alongside other languages, such as India. The Expanding Circle includes settings where English is mainly learned as a foreign language, such as Viet Nam. These circles describe social histories and uses, not three ranks of ability. They cannot label every individual speaker or explain every modern use of English. Mai compared examples without calling one accent better than another. She concluded that the model was useful as a starting point, but communication also required listening carefully and asking for clarification.
First identify the central activity. Underline actions and reasons separately; an action tells what happened, a reason tells why. A negative detail can help you reject an attractive but inaccurate option.
