Use a question word + to-infinitive after know, learn, ask, decide: We learned how to shape clay. Do not add a second subject: not “how we to shape”. The book uses /æ/, /ɑː/ and /e/ as reference symbols. Compare cat /æ/, father /ɑː/ and bed /e/. American dictionaries often write the last two vowels /ɑ/ and /ɛ/. Our audio uses en-US: craft normally has /æ/ there, but many southern British speakers use /ɑː/. Do not use craft to test an accent-independent contrast. For cat, open the jaw with the tongue towards the front; father has a more back open vowel; bed is less open. Accent variation is not an error.
