Words in meaningful groups

artisan — thợ thủ công. The artisan shapes a bowl by hand.
community helper — người giúp ích cộng đồng. The nurse is a community helper.
handicraft — sản phẩm thủ công. This handicraft is made from bamboo.
preserve — gìn giữ. We preserve old skills by teaching them.
pottery — đồ gốm. The village is known for pottery.
look after — chăm sóc. Volunteers look after the garden.
find out — tìm hiểu. We find out how the bowls are made.
pass down — truyền lại. Grandparents pass down their skills.

Pronunciation workshop

The book uses /æ/, /ɑː/ and /e/ as reference symbols. Compare cat /æ/, father /ɑː/ and bed /e/. American dictionaries often write the last two vowels /ɑ/ and /ɛ/. Our audio uses en-US: craft normally has /æ/ there, but many southern British speakers use /ɑː/. Do not use craft to test an accent-independent contrast. For cat, open the jaw with the tongue towards the front; father has a more back open vowel; bed is less open. Accent variation is not an error.

Read the example words slowly, then in a short sentence. Record one attempt only with permission. Compare the target sound or stress with the reference, and repeat the phrase without adding an extra vowel.

A phrasal verb has a verb and particle: find out (discover), look after (care for), pass down (transmit). Learn the whole phrase and whether an object can separate it.
