Pronunciation: Unstressed words in connected speech

In The bus can take us to the centre, articles, pronouns, prepositions and an uncontrasted auxiliary are often weak: the /ðə/, can /kən/, to /tə/. Content words carry the main beats. Read it again stressing can to correct someone who says it cannot. Weak forms depend on focus; keep the message intelligible.

Grammar and use

Present perfect connects past change to now: The area has become busier. Use for/since for continuing periods and this is the first time + present perfect for experience. Double comparatives show progressive change: busier and busier, more and more crowded, less and less quiet. Correlative comparatives show association: The more people travel, the more capacity is needed. Do not confuse percentage points with percentage change when describing urban shares.
