Bài giảng

A conversation to begin

A: It’s a busy morning at the exhibition, isn’t it?
B: It is. Have you had a chance to see the media display?
A: Not yet. Which part would you recommend?
B: The comparison of an old notice and a current update is interesting.

Meaning before form

Adverbial clauses of manner describe how: Follow the procedure as the editor explained. As if/as though introduce an appearance or comparison, not necessarily a fact. Result clauses use so + adjective/adverb + that, or such + noun phrase + that: The headline was so misleading that readers misunderstood; It was such a clear report that everyone followed. Keep result distinct from purpose (so that).

Topic preview: Digital media offer fast updates and searchable sources, while print provides a fixed edition and may support focused reading. Both can mislead if evidence is weak. I would compare a report’s attribution and correction policy rather than assume that one format is always reliable. For example, in our fictional library case, an old notice about a one-day repair is mistaken for news of permanent closure. Sharing the image without its date changes what readers understand even if the original notice was accurate. I would find the current primary announcement before forwarding the claim. A longer printed or digital report can then explain the background. The useful question is which source, form and level of detail serve this reader’s purpose. Speed and depth can work together, provided we keep context and check important claims.
Follow-up: Is a professional-looking layout enough?
Response: No. Check date, source, supporting evidence and any correction, regardless of the medium.

Khái niệm chính

Linking /r/ between two vowels
In non-rhotic British speech, written final r can link before a vowel: far away /fɑːr‿əweɪ/, share information /ʃeər‿ɪnfəmeɪʃən/. In rhotic American speech, /r/ is already pronounced; no special inserted sound is needed. Practise both declared accent patterns. Do not require an American speaker to drop /r/ before a consonant or insert /r/ in words without it.
