Steve Jobs’s career shows why a life story needs both a timeline and a wider view of collaboration. In 1976, Jobs, Steve Wozniak and Ron Wayne founded Apple Computer Company as a partnership. Wayne soon left, while Jobs and Wozniak continued developing the business. Jobs presented the Macintosh in 1984, then left Apple in 1985 and started NeXT. He returned to Apple in 1997 after the company acquired NeXT. These dates show a career with major changes rather than a simple uninterrupted rise. They also remind readers that products were made by teams of engineers, designers and many others. Admiring a leader does not require pretending that one person invented every component. A thoughtful biography explains what happened, identifies the evidence and separates it from judgement. A reader may admire persistence or attention to design while still asking how colleagues contributed.
