Our class can practise a gentle movement routine without turning it into a competition. First, check that the teacher has approved the space and that there is room to move without touching anyone. Stand comfortably and gently roll your shoulders. Next, walk at an easy pace for a few minutes. Increase the pace only if you feel comfortable; nobody needs to copy a faster partner. Finally, slow down gradually and pause. Stop and tell the supervising adult if you feel pain, dizziness or unusual breathlessness. Anyone with a health condition should follow qualified advice rather than this general classroom example. You can also ask the teacher for an accessible alternative. The aim is to give clear instructions and respect different needs, not to prove that one routine suits everybody.
Follow-up: What if a partner feels dizzy?
Response: Stop the activity, tell the supervising adult and follow the school’s help procedure; do not encourage the partner to push through it.
