Dear Volunteer Coordinator,
I am writing to apply for a position at the Saturday reading club. I am a Grade 10 student and can attend all four Saturdays in November. I enjoy reading with my younger cousin, and I am patient when she needs more time. Last term, I helped sort books for our class library and checked that borrowed books were returned. I understand that a librarian will supervise the sessions and that children’s information must remain private. I would be happy to organise shelves or help readers find suitable books. I can arrive at eight thirty for preparation. Thank you for considering my application. I look forward to hearing from you.

From purpose to a finished text

Notice how the model opens, develops specific details and closes without unsupported promises. Plan for the stated audience; draft in your own words, then check meaning and sentence links.

Language resource: Past continuous (was/were + -ing) sets an action in progress; past simple reports a completed event: While we were packing, the organiser called. When does not automatically require one tense: meaning decides. An -ed adjective describes a feeling (interested), while -ing describes its cause (interesting). Useful is helpful; useless is not effective, not morally worthless.

Stress in two-syllable words with the same spelling
A RE-cord /ˈrekərd/; to re-CORD /rɪˈkɔrd/. A PRE-sent /ˈprezənt/; to pre-SENT /prɪˈzent/. Read: We record each present in a notebook. These noun–verb pairs change stress; not every two-syllable word follows this pattern.
