Original reading
At a neighbourhood reading club, volunteers initially brought whatever books they could find. The shelves filled quickly, but several younger readers could not use the difficult novels. Huy suggested asking the librarian what was needed before collecting more. The next week, the team sorted books by reading level and repaired loose covers with adult help. They kept damaged books away from children until repairs were checked. One volunteer read aloud while another helped pupils choose a book to borrow. Huy discovered that listening patiently mattered more than giving a long speech. After each session, the team recorded attendance without publishing children’s names. Their report described a better organised service, not a miracle. They still needed more large-print books and an accessible entrance. Volunteering had taught them to begin with the users’ needs rather than the volunteers’ favourite activity.
