Meaning and form

Report a yes/no question with asked + if/whether + subject + verb, using statement order. “Is the path open?” → She asked if the path was open. In a past reporting context, backshift present to past and can to could; change pronouns/time expressions when the context requires it. Do not keep do/does/did or invert the subject.

From rule to accurate use

Start with the intended meaning, then identify the subject and verb pattern.

Worked example 1: “Is the cave open?” She asked ___.

Answer and reasoning: if the cave was open Reported question uses if + subject + verb.

Worked example 2: He asked {{1}} we could join the trip. (if/that)

Answer and reasoning: He asked if we could join the trip. (if/that) A yes/no question is introduced by if/whether.

Apply the rule to a new sentence rather than memorising only the answer.
