A purposeful exchange

Duc: Could you suggest a way to reduce distractions?
Teacher: I recommend turning off unnecessary alerts.
Duc: Thanks. Should I also keep a separate backup?

A useful exchange has a clear purpose: ask, respond, check and close. Use a polite question rather than an order when you need help. If you are unsure, ask “Could you explain that?” instead of pretending to understand.

Practise with a partner

Role A needs information about electronic devices. Role B gives one answer and checks whether it is clear. Swap roles, add a follow-up question and explain one reason for your choice.

Useful responses: “Certainly.” “Let me check.” “Do you mean ...?” “Thanks for explaining.”

Suggest and recommend can take V-ing or a clause with should: I suggest checking the settings. I recommend that you should back up your work. Advise also takes V-ing, a should-clause or object + to-infinitive: I advise you to check. Do not use “suggest you to check”.

  • Do not translate every word separately; preserve the meaning of whole phrases.
  • A fluent opinion still needs evidence when it makes a factual claim.
