Meaning and form

Suggest and recommend can take V-ing or a clause with should: I suggest checking the settings. I recommend that you should back up your work. Advise also takes V-ing, a should-clause or object + to-infinitive: I advise you to check. Do not use “suggest you to check”.

From rule to accurate use

Start with the intended meaning, then identify the subject and verb pattern.

Worked example 1: I suggest {{1}} the settings. (check)

Answer and reasoning: I suggest checking the settings. (check) Suggest + V-ing.

Worked example 2: Choose the correct advice.

Answer and reasoning: I suggest resting. Suggest takes V-ing,not object+to.

Apply the rule to a new sentence rather than memorising only the answer.
