Remembering the past
Past continuous: was/were + V-ing describes an action in progress at a past time. Past simple can interrupt it: While Grandma was cooking, I arrived. Wish + past simple expresses an unreal present wish: I wish I knew the recipe. With be, were is a standard form for all subjects in wishes.
Our experiences
Present perfect: have/has + past participle connects past experience with the present. Use ever/never for experience, already/yet for completion, for + duration and since + starting point. Do not normally combine present perfect with a finished past time such as yesterday; use past simple then.
Vietnamese lifestyle: then and now
Learn verb patterns as part of the verb: decide, hope, want, plan + to-infinitive; enjoy, avoid, finish, mind + V-ing. Example: We decided to interview grandparents. They enjoy sharing memories. A change in the following form is not optional for these verbs.
